Tooth extractions are one of the most common oral surgeries. Whether you have a damaged or decayed tooth that needs to be pulled, or your wisdom teeth are growing in improperly and must be removed, Dr. Carpenter and Dr. Collado from Carmel Mountain Ranch Dental Care are here to help.
Why Would I Need A Tooth Extraction?
The most common reason that a patient may need a tooth extraction is problematic wisdom teeth growth. Wisdom teeth typically grow in during the late teens and early twenties, and most of the time they tend to erupt incorrectly. This means that their growth threatens to shift the position of the surrounding teeth. In this case, extraction is the best option to prevent other, more serious issues.
Other reasons that a patient may need a tooth extraction include damage from an impact injury or untreated tooth decay, or damage to the gums and tooth root from periodontal disease.
Understanding the Tooth Extraction Process
The tooth extraction process is fast and minimally-invasive. First, Dr. Carpenter will x-ray your mouth and perform a comprehensive oral exam to ensure that an extraction is necessary. If so, they’ll develop a removal plan.
Then, a “simple extraction” is usually performed. One of our dentists will numb your tooth and gum, and use a tool called an “elevator” to loosen the tooth in the socket. This allows your tooth to be extracted efficiently and as painlessly as possible. The actual process of a simple extraction usually takes less than 5 minutes for each tooth, and it’s very simple.
However, if your tooth is positioned improperly or has broken off at the gum line, a surgical extraction may be required. This procedure involves making an incision in the gum and removing the bone and tooth structure before extracting the tooth. Recovery typically only takes a few days.
